NTPC commissions solar project in Gujarat, brings total portfolio to 69,454 MW

NTPC Limited announced commissioning of its 56 MW Kawas solar project in Gujarat. This has come into effect after the recent inaugural of the final 21 MW phase. The Kawas solar project consists of 33 MW ground mounted arrays and 23 MW floating solar installations within the existing NTPC Kawas gas based power station. This project has been developed by NTPC under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy’s central public sector undertaking scheme phase II. The project was awarded a viability gap funding in an auction conducted by the Solar Energy Corporation of India in 2019.

NTPC is gradually reducing its carbon footprint by reducing greenhouse gas emissions through the deployment of renewable energy (RE) projects in existing stations as well as by constructing new green field RE projects. The company has planned over 262 MW of floating solar across 1300 acres of its reservoir area. NTPC has now expanded its total footprint to 69,454 MW of installed capacity.

Recently in July 2022, NTPC established a 100 MW floating solar power plant at Ramagundam, Peddapalli district in Telangana. The plant has been completely commissioned with the commercial operation of the final capacity of 20 MW. The entire project spans over 500 acres. The project has been completed with the support of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited under an engineering, procurement, and construction contract.
