Metastable Materials, a Bengaluru based urban mining startup, inaugurated its research and development (R&D) and Innovation center in Bengaluru. The startup has devised a chemical free process that helps in extracting precious materials from lithium-ion batteries that are nearing the end of their useful lives in an environment friendly manner. The metals that can be extracted include copper, aluminium, cobalt, nickel, and lithium.
The startup’s recently built R&D department will work on process optimisation, equipment design and development, alongwith other important business areas. The 5,000 square-foot facility has a dedicated lab for quality analysis. The lab performs routine quality checks on extracted materials and focuses on ongoing process efficiency and yield improvements.
The startup asserts that its unique technique can deliver up to 90 percent recovery of constituent materials for lithium batteries across a range of cell chemistries. It aims to handle the processing of up to 600 tons of end-of-life lithium-ion batteries per year and eventually cater to 4 to 6 percent of India’s end-of-life Li-ion batteries treatment value chain.
