EVI Technologies, IIT Delhi to develop battery swapping system for EVs

Under the Sustainable E-Mobility vertical of Delhi Research Implementation and Innovation, IIT Delhi, EVI Technologies (EVIT) has developed the Battery Xchange System (BXS) for two and three-wheeler electric vehicles (EVs). EVIT is installing the BXS at IIT Delhi as a concept developed for electric three-wheelers that will only be utilised on campus. Within two minutes, BXS enables an EV owner to swap a totally or partially discharged battery with a fully charged battery. The designed BXS is currently being installed at the IIT Delhi campus for three-wheeler e-rickshaws to investigate the challenges and user behaviour towards the concept of battery swapping.

EVIT stated that the BXS in-process concept design would begin in May 2022 and will help in production changes in accordance with the long-awaited government policy allied to EV battery swapping stations in India, which was recently released for public comment by Niti Ayog in April 2022. The BXS will be manufactured and assembled later, depending on the standardisation of two and three-wheeler EV batteries. According to EVIT, BXS enables EV users to book a fully charged battery by utilising the mobile/web application to locate the nearest xchange station.

In January 2022, EVIT and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) signed an agreement to set up battery swapping and charging stations. As part of the 10 year MoU signed between the two companies, EVIT would deploy charging infrastructure at 5,000 BSNL stations across the country, covering key cities. Under the agreement, EVIT will make the whole upfront investment in services related to the MoU, as well as the operation and maintenance of battery swapping infrastructure.
