NTPC invites bids to develop 900 MW of solar capacity in Cuba

NTPC Limited has issued a request for proposals for the development of 900 MW of solar parks in the Republic of Cuba. NTPC and Union Electrica de Cuba (UNE) would collaborate on the development of 900 MW solar PV parks in Cuba. Cuba is a member of the International Solar Alliance (ISA), a treaty-based organisation with over 101 signatory countries, 80 of which have ratified the framework MW solar PV project with developer selection through an international competitive process.

The Cuban government, through its Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM), has accepted ISA’s support for the construction of 900 MW solar PV parks in 175 locations across the 15 provinces of Cuba. Under ISA Program-6, NTPC will assist UNE and MINEM in this selection process, as well as in the signing of project agreements and overseeing project implementation until commissioning. This 900 MW project, part of Cuba’s 2,100 MW solar project implementation target, aims to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The annual generation per MW is expected to be 2,400 MWh.

In October 2021, NTPC signed an MoU with the global energy giant EDF to explore potential power project development prospects overseas and also collaborate on research and development, technical services, and consultancy assignments on a global scale. The primary markets of interest for the companies are Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa. This partnership will help NTPC in expanding its portfolio of power generation assets globally and support the development of clean energy projects worldwide.
