NTPC Limited has awarded the project ‘Standalone Fuel-Cell based Micro-grid with hydrogen production using electrolyser’ at NTPC Simhadri, Andhra Pradesh. This project will be India’s first green hydrogen-based energy storage projects. It would serve as a test bed for large-scale hydrogen energy storage projects and would be valuable for researching and installing several microgrids in off-grid and strategic locations across the country.
Furthermore, the hydrogen would be produced using advanced 240 kW solid oxide electrolyser that would be powered by a nearby floating solar installation. The hydrogen generated during daylight hours would be held at high pressure and powered by a 50 kW solid oxide fuel cell. From 5 p.m. until 7 a.m., the system would run on its own. NTPC developed this project configuration in-house.
In November 2021, NTPC signed a power purchase agreement and other project agreements with Indian Railways, Madhya Pradesh Power Management Company Limited and Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Limited (RUMSL) for 325 MW solar projects at Shajapur Solar Park in Madhya Pradesh. In the RUMSL’s auction held in July 2021 for 450 MW of solar projects at Shajapur Solar Park in Madhya Pradesh, NTPC Renewable Energy won a capacity of 105 MW at Rs 2.35 per kWh and a capacity of 220 MW at Rs 2.33 per kWh.
