MingYang Smart Energy launches a 16 MW offshore wind turbine

MingYang Smart Energy has launched MySE 16.0-242, reportedly the word’s largest hybrid drive wind turbine for offshore wind power. With a 16 MW rated capacity, the 264 metre high turbine features a 242 metre diameter rotor and 118 metre long blades. MySE 16.0-242 is designed for high-wind IEC IB including typhoon-class IEC TC. The swept area of the product is 46,000

square metres. In one year, a single MySE 16.0-242 turbine can produce 80,000 MWh of electricity, which is enough to power more than 20,000 households. MySE 16.0-242 produces 45 per cent more energy than MingYang’s former turbine model, the MySE 11.0-203. Moreover, the weight of the product is competitively low, at less than 37 tonnes per MW.

During its 25-year lifespan, one MySE 16.0-242 is expected to eliminate more than 1.6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. On the design front, all power electronics and transformers have been moved up the tower into the nacelle, simplifying wiring and improving system maintenance. As an added benefit, an airtight design protects the nacelle from severe salt spray corrosion while allowing for internal natural air cooling, resulting in an optimum environment for efficient operation within the nacelle. MySE 16.0-242, certified by DNV and the China General Certification Center, is scheduled for full prototype roll-out in 2022, followed by prototype installation in the first half of 2023 and commercial production in 2024.
