Green Steel through Hydrogen Direct Reduction

Primetals Technologies Austria Gmbh, The Energy and Resources Institute and Siemens India have jointly released a policy brief titled, “Green Steel through Hydrogen Direct Reduction: A study on the role of hydrogen in the Indian iron and steel sector”. The policy brief analyses the role of steel production through low carbon hydrogen technology.

The report highlights that one of the leading technology option is to use low or zero carbon hydrogen as a reducing agent in a direct reduction plant. Subsequently this power can be utilised for the electric arc furnace to allow the production of green steel. The key concern, however, remains that steel production through this route is costlier compared to the traditional steelmaking routes. To this end, the report mentions several demand and supply side interventions to promote green steel.
