Discoms get three-month moratorium to pay power generators due to COVID-19 disruption

The Ministry of Power (MoP) has announced that the CPSU generation and transmission companies would continue to supply electricity, even to discoms owing substantial outstanding dues to generation companies. As per the announcement, in the current crisis, there will be no curtailment of supply to any discom. As of January 31, 2020, discoms owed Rs 62.19 billion in overdue outstanding payments to renewable energy generators. The ministry has also directed the CERC to provide a moratorium of three months to discoms to make payments to generating companies and transmission licensees and not levy any penalties for late payments. The MoP has requested state governments to issue similar directions to state electricity regulatory commissions.
