The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) has invited suggestions and comments on the proposed amendments to its Renewable Energy Purchase Obligations (RPOs). The commission’s draft amendment has proposed RPOs for the financial years 2019-20, 2020-21, and 2021-22. As per the amendment, the RPO for the financial year 2019-20 is 16.25 per cent, of which the solar RPO is 6 per cent. For the financial years 2020-21 and 2021-22, the RPOs are set at 18.25 per cent and 21 per cent, respectively.
In February 2019 The Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency has issued the Solar Energy Policy, 2019. The policy targets 9 GW of installed solar PV capacity in Tamil Nadu by 2023. it also aims to produce 40 per cent of the targeted capacity from distributed generation. To incentivise the residential segment, the state has exempted electricity tax for two years from the issue of the policy.
