According to the Economic survey 2019, India’s renewable energy sector will offer an investment opportunity of $30 billion every year for the next decade and beyond, but the country cannot wish away conventional sources of energy like oil and coal. The survey reports that the share of renewables in the total electricity generation of the country stood around 10 per cent in 2018-19 as compared to around 6 per cent in 2014-15. Globally, India stands fourth in wind power, fifth in solar power and fifth in terms of the overall renewable power capacity. The cumulative installed renewable capacity has more than doubled from 35 GW in March 2014 to 78 GW in March 2019. In addition, around 27 GW of renewable energy capacity is under installation and over 38 GW is under bidding.
