Norsk Hydro shares jump after Brazilian state lifts embargo

The Brazilian state of Para lifted a production embargo on Norsk Hydro’s Alunorte alumina refinery, raising the share value of the Norwegian aluminium maker. The shares rose by 5.3 per cent to a six-week high of 41.6 Norwegian crowns on the hope that the plant will be able to produce at its full potential. The world’s largest alumina refinery has been operating at half capacity since early last year after the company admitted making unlicensed emissions of untreated water during severe rains. At full capacity, the plant can produce some 6.4 million tonnes of alumina, or 10 per cent of the world’s capacity outside China.
