Central government drops plan to install 12 GW solar power projects

The Central government has dropped its plan of installing 12 GW solar power projects through NTPC Limited due to the recent fall in the solar power prices.

Earlier, the government had planned to install 15 GW of grid-connected solar photovoltaic (PV) power plants under the National Solar Mission in a span of five years from 2014-15 to 2018-19 in three tranches, with NTPC Limited as the implementing agency. Out Of the 15 GW capacity, NTPC Limited has already completed auction of the Tranche I (3 GW) capacity of which, 2.75 GW has been completed and 0.25 GW is under construction. Now, the government has decided not to take up the implementation of Tranches II (5 GW) and III (7 GW) of the 15 GW capacity.
