Southern Railway to develop rooftop solar projects at Chennai Central and Egmore stations

Southern Railway is planning to install 1.9 MWp and 250 kWp rooftop solar projects at eight platforms of the Chennai Central station and four platforms of the Chennai Egmore station respectively. The rooftop plants at the Egmore station are expected to generate over 0.37 MUs of electricity per annum and will help achieve cost savings of Rs 1.6 million per annum. Meanwhile, the rooftop plants at the Chennai Central station are expected to generate 8,333 units of electricity per day, which will help meet 28 per cent of the total consumption needs of the station. On weekends, when there is low demand at the Chennai Central station, the electricity generated will be transmitted to the Basin Bridge yard situated nearby. According to railway officials, the combined investment for the projects set up at both railway stations is Rs 65 million per MW.
