Solar power generation spikes in the first quarter of 2018

Solar power generation in the first quarter (Q1) of the calendar year 2018-19 witnessed a 103 per cent year-on-year increase compared to the solar power generated in Q1 of the calendar year 2017-18. The data was recently released by the Central Electricity Authority according to which 8,536 MUs were generated in Q1 2018, as compared to the 4,210 million units generated by solar projects during the same period in 2017.

This was a result of the 20 GW of cumulative solar installations in January 2018. Solar installations during the period surged with the commissioning of several large solar projects that could not get connected to the grid in 2017. In the fourth quarter of calendar year 2017, solar power accounted for over 6.5 billion units of electricity produced in India.
