ABB to provide microgrid facility to Jamaica

Jamaica Public Service Company Limited (JPS) has selected ABB to provide a 24.5 MW microgrid facility and energy storage system to help integrate solar and wind into Jamaica’s power supply. The microgrid will support power availability during periods of interrupted solar and wind energy supply due to clouds, low wind or other factors. Located about 500 miles southeast of Cuba, the island’s hotels, restaurants and homes rely heavily on imported fossil fuel, which is costly and subject to volatile prices. JPS has already integrated about 160 MW of renewable energy into the grid, which represents about 25 per cent of its generation capacity.
