Abhishek Srivastava is joint director, Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (UPERC), a post he has been holding since 2014, and manages the regulatory aspects of power plants in the state. His primary responsibilities include formation of regulations, capital costs and tariff determination, as well as issues related to power purchase agreements (PPAs) for conventional and renewable energy.
Srivastava is also actively working on the formation of the regulatory framework for energy efficiency, demand side management, and decentralised distributed generation through mini and smart grids. Solar and bagasse-based systems are the two primary sources of renewable energy in Uttar Pradesh and Srivastava realises the need to make all efforts to harness these sources.
Srivastava has played a key role in the construction of the commission’s new office building, which is the first intelligent and energy efficient public building in Uttar Pradesh. This building is supported by UNDP in recognition of its energy efficiency measures and is slated to be benchmarked against industry best practices.
Srivastava started his career as an assistant engineer with the Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam in 2003 until 2012, wherein he held charge as C&I engineer for a 2×210 MW plant. He was thereafter promoted to the post of executive engineer and, as a member of the core strategy team, helped conceive advanced information communication technologies and business process reengineering solutions for the organisation.
Srivastava has over 15 years of multi-functional and multi-disciplinary experience in the energy sector, enriched further by a multitude of training programmes and certifications. He has undergone extensive training on KWU and LMW power plants, breakthrough management and regulatory affairs. In addition, he has attended cross-cultural country-based training at the Japan International Cooperative Agency, Tokyo.
Srivastava holds an engineering degree with a specialisation in electronics from MJP University, Bareilly. After working for six years, he went on to do an executive management programme at the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta. In addition, he is a certified green belt in six sigma from the Department of Management Studies, Indian Institute of Technology Madras.
A technology enthusiast, Srivastava is also interested in sports and often plays table tennis. Besides, in his spare time, he enjoys playing the guitar and reading. He family includes his wife and their five-year-old daughter.
