As of November 2017, India had set up 1,085 small-hydro power (SHP) projects with an aggregate capacity of 4,400 MW. Karnataka led with 162 projects having a total installed capacity of 1,230.73 MW. Himachal Pradesh came in second with 184 projects and a total capacity of 842.11 MW. According to the SHP database compiled by the Alternate Hydro Energy Centre of IIT Roorkee, 7,133 potential sites with an aggregate capacity of 21,133.65 MW have been identified for SHP projects.
