The Madhya Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (MPERC) has decided to retain the must-run status for wind, solar, small-hydro and municipal solid waste-based power plants. The decision comes in the wake of the resistance faced by the regulator after it released a draft order withdrawing the must-run status of renewable energy in August 2017. As per the latest MPERC order, all renewable energy sources will be permitted open access in the state under Section 42 of the Electricity Act, subject to the available capacity of the transmission and distribution network. In addition, open access charges as determined by the MPERC will apply from time to time.
