TANGEDCO proposes cut in net-metering rates for solar customers

The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) has proposed revising the accounting method to reduce the tariffs for the existing net metering programme in the state. The proposal is to reset the net metering tariff by calculating a rate of 50 per cent of the lowest solar tender tariff during 2016-17, or at the rate of 50 per cent of the solar preferential tariff issued by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) corresponding to 2017-18, whichever is less. The other highlights of the proposal are pertaining to the maximum rooftop solar capacity and no ceiling on energy exported to the grid. TANGEDCO has cited various reasons for the tariff reduction, including recent record low tariffs and losses incurred in wheeling and banking of wind energy in the state.
